Why Are the Radiator Materials Mostly Made of Aluminum?

Aluminum combines the advantages of both thermal conductivity and lightweight and is therefore commonly used as the best heat sink aluminium profile for heat dissipation from electronic parts.

Most of the heat sink materials used in cooling fans on the market today are aluminum, and only a very few are made of other materials.

In fact, aluminum is not the best metal in terms of thermal conductivity. The best thermal conductivity is silver, followed by copper, and finally aluminum. Silver is relatively expensive and is unlikely to be used as a heat sink; although copper is cumbersome, it has advantages in heat dissipation effect and price and is now gradually used as a heat sink.

Why Choose the Heat Sink Aluminium Profile?

 

6063T5 aluminum alloy is generally used in air-cooled radiators because aluminum alloy has good processing performance (pure aluminum is difficult to machine due to insufficient hardness), easy surface treatment, and low cost.

Heat sink aluminum is not 100% pure aluminum (the percentage of aluminum is usually around 98%) because pure aluminum is too soft and manufacturers usually add small amounts of other metals to cast aluminum alloys to obtain the proper hardness.

The size of the thermal conductivity indicates the size of the thermal conductivity of the metal. The larger the thermal conductivity, the correspondingly lower the thermal conductivity thermal resistance value and enhanced thermal conductivity.

Among the metal materials, silver has the highest thermal conductivity, but it is also relatively expensive. Pure copper has the next highest thermal conductivity, but it is not easy to process.

However, with the increasing demand for heat dissipation, the comprehensive use of various materials with high thermal conductivity has become the general trend.

Some heat sinks are made of pure copper or a combination of copper and aluminum. For example, some heat sinks use pure copper at the bottom to take advantage of copper's large thermal conductivity and relatively large heat transfer, while the fins still use aluminum alloy sheets to make the heat exchange area as large as possible for easy processing in order to increase the convective heat transfer.

The biggest difficulty of the method is how to fully connect the copper and aluminum fins adequately. If the connection is not good enough, the contact thermal resistance will be generated in large quantities, which will affect the heat dissipation effect.
